Summary:
This study is the of two parts of a large investigation that has been conducted regarding the so called volume of aggregate values within intermodal transportation systems. Data have been collected from eighteen intermodal systems in four countries, such as Brazil (five), Germany (six), Netherlands (four), and france (three). All the intermodal transportation systems have more than 10 years of operation. These data have been used to define the variables of the equations in this first segment, hereby presented, as well as the quantitative analysis of the second part of the study that will be presented, as well as the quantitative analysis of the second part of the study that will be presented in the year 2002. The backbone of this study is a new concept of inversion in the volume of aggregate values generated within intermodal systems. Assuming that these transportation systems already exist, the integration of these systems brings together the volumes of aggregate values per any period of each system, which is the sum of all cargo values transported in each system. Naturally, there are differences in the volumes of the systems. This study is made up to prove that, as time passes and as the intermodal network becomes more and more operational, systems that have higher volumes of aggregate values star to loose them to other systems in the network, as a result of economies of scale and relocations of complementary industries. The result are significant shifts in aggregate values within each system, completing what is hereby called inversion in the volume of aggregate values.
