Summary: Despite comprehensive observations of the relationship between innovation and competitiveness within the macro and microeconomic scopes (BAUMOL 2002, PORTER 1990), standards to combine the different aspects and complexities of such relationship are patently lacking. A qualitative investigation of innovative and industry-leading companies making signifi cant investments in Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) was pursued to glimpse the guidelines that steer such companies’ innovative activities. Eisenhardt (1989) emphasized the success of case studies in building or enhancing pre-existing theoretical constructs.
