Resumo: This essay`s objective is threefold: to analyze the conceptual and theoretical development of the business model concept in the academic arena; identify main efforts scholars have made to close eventual conceptual and theoretical gaps; analyze the implications of those shortcomings for the business model literature advancement. The essay is theoretically rooted in the business model research produced in the last 15-20 years including both conceptual and empirical studies, literature review articles, especially theme?s most cited authors. The results indicate that business model literature still displays an inconsistent use of the concept and that divergence still constitutes an obstacle to a common language development and integrated research efforts. Besides, conceptual dispersion feeds theoretical disparity which fragments theorization concerning the business model structure and management. However, instead of justifying its gaps in literature relative newness, the business model research could strengthen its convergence themes in order to move forward beyond those fundamental issues.
