Research Project - International Subsidiary Performance

Purpose/Relevance of Project:   The main objective of this research project is to develop a more realistic, and therefore, complex tool to enhance the measurement and assessment of performance in foreign subsidiaries. To achieve that we have sought to identify a wide range of measures used to evaluate the performance of subsidiaries abroad, through a comprehensive literature review followed by an analysis of the measures found. The assumption that drives the search for a better performance evaluation tool/measure is that there should be a strong correlation between performance assessment and effective performance; therefore, the enhancement/refinement of performance evaluation would enable the rise of sustainable foreign revenues.

The measurement of internationalization performance should be regarded as fundamental for both industry and government. Brazilian managers can use international performance measures to assess the degree of success of their internationalization process. Furthermore, future decisions on international investments and/or further steps to intensify the internationalization process can be augmented with accurate performance data. For the Brazilian government, there are two key applications for an internationalization performance measure. First, a multidimensional assessment tool could be used by investment agencies (i.e., BNDES) to more accurately forecast future cash flows of its borrowers. Second, international performance measures could also be integrated into the evaluation of public policies (e.g., trade and industrial) aimed at improving the competitiveness of Brazilian firms abroad.
