Belo Horizonte

Offering over 100 years of history, beautiful scenery and unique attractions, Belo Horizonte is a compulsory stop in any Brazilian sightseeing tour. Framed by the beautiful scenery of the Curral mountain range, the city deserves its name and will not let you down in your quest for gastronomy, culture and leisure. It offers beautiful parks and churches, besides modern regions, squares and bars.

Tourist attractions: Mangabeiras Park lies in the Curral mountain range, 6 km away from the city center, and it has streams and natural springs that are perfect for those who love nature. There you can also find the Mangabeiras lookout, from where you can gaze at a beautiful and broad overview of the city.

If visitors are looking for the city's unique architecture they can check out Liberdade Square, where the city's administration buildings stand. These were built around 1897 and were recently redecorated. Another pleasant trip is a visit to Estação Square, whose architecture dates from the 1920s, and also downtown to the Niemeyer building, which takes its name from one of the greatest architects in Brazil and is a symbol of modernism in the city.

The famous Pampulha Chapel, or São Francisco de Assis, together with Mineirão (the second largest covered stadium in the world) and Mineirinho, make up the Pampulha architectural complex that was built around a lake. It is also around the lake that races and marathons are held every year.

Gastronomy: Belo Horizonte has been highlighted in the world's media as the “The City of Bars”. However, the capital also offers excellent restaurants whose dishes range from the simple and delicious local cuisine to sophisticated international cuisines. Xapuri, in the Pampulha district, is the ideal place to try out delicious local cuisine in a typically Brazilian environment. Should the guest be interested in food from other regions in Brazil there are good options such as Bahia cuisine at Alguidares, where you can find seafood and the famous acarajé dish, among other traditional choices. To enjoy famous Brazilian barbecue you can go to Ambrosio’s or to Porcão, both all-you-can-eat restaurants that offer the best meat in town and very pleasant environments.

Handicraft: Every Sunday morning the capital hosts a handicraft fair that locals have nicknamed “Hippie Fair”. It began in 1969 and it is located downtown on Afonso Pena avenue. The fair sells custom jewelry, clothes, handicraft, furniture, flowers and, among other attractions, it offers dancing classes. Its broad variety of products and accessible prices attract both tourists and locals, as they are sure they will always find something interesting. But the capital also offers many handicraft shops such as the games shop Origem, and also Trem de Ferro, where you can find local handicraft, furniture, and sweets.
