 Macacos
Macacos village in Nova Lima, MG, is another option for ecotourism near the capital, only 27 km from BH. Macacos began to be settled during the second half of the 18th century and its growth was mainly driven by gold mining at the so-called “Descoberto de Macacos”.
There are still some buildings left over from colonial times, such as São Sebastião Chapel, although there are only a few of them. However, what really attracts visitors to the region is the large number of activities related to the beautiful natural scenery and radical sports such as trekking, waterfalls, mountain biking and hiking.
People who would rather do something quieter will find it worth their while to visit Macacos Waterfalls, hike through the natural reservation and later on visit one of the local handicraft shops. Macacos also holds several events and festivals throughout the year, such as São Sebastião Party, Gastronomic Festival and Happy Hour nights, besides shows and seasonal programs. Macacos brings together natural beauty, the agitation of radical sports and the peace of country life.
